Good numbers were present off the Durham/South Tyneside coast at the weekend with watching at Whitburn Obs on Sunday morning producing 3+ Minke Whales, 9+ White-beaked Dolphins and 8+ Harbour Porpoise. Flat seas and cloudy mornings (giving nice sharp viewing conditions) are the best. Look out for animals sufacing between 1 and 3km offshore, with the dolphins often breaching fully multiple times. They're likely to be around a while, so try spot some cetaceans when you're next at the coast. The week commencing 29 July is National Whale and Dolphin Watch week - see http://www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk/national-whale-and-dolphin-watch-2017/ for more details.
