The Discovery of Birds

An Exhibition at Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens

From the dazzling plumage of exotic species to the meticulous studies of Britain’s beloved garden birds, The Discovery of Birds at Ushaw is a must-see exhibition for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Running from Saturday 12 April to Sunday 22 June 2025, this fascinating exhibition uncovers the evolution of bird art and ornithology, drawing on Ushaw Library’s extraordinary collection of natural history books. Spanning the Renaissance to the nineteenth century, it showcases the work of pioneering naturalists and illustrators who shaped our understanding of avian life.

Marvel at breathtaking illustrations that brought the world’s birds to life long before photography. Discover how explorers, scientists, and artists documented newly discovered species, capturing the beauty and mystery of the avian world. This is more than an exhibition—it’s a journey through the golden age of bird discovery.

Entry is included with an Ushaw Membership or Day Pass.
