Species Recovery Projects

During the past couple of years, the Club Board has responded to consultations from the local authorities regarding species to be considered for inclusion in recovery projects.

On 8 July Natural England published a list of about 130 projects awarded three-year funding from 2026 to 2029 covering a wide range of wildlife.

It isn't obvious what determines the order of the list. "Durham" only appears once - in relation to Alchemilla (Lady's Mantle) - but is more generally incorporated in "Northumbria" as a Natural England region.

Bird species listed with a "Northumbria" tag include Black Grouse, Merlin, Willow Tit and a group of beach nesters (roseate tern, common tern, little tern, arctic tern, ringed plover, black-headed gull, herring gull, eider). Spotted Flycatcher and Ring Ouzel are listed with reference to Cumbria, while House Martin, Twite, Whinchat and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker appear with a "National" tag and there are other bird species with other regional tags.

More detailed information on individual projects will appear at a later stage.
