Durham Wildlife Trust and Durham Cathedral are working together to understand how people use and enjoy the riverbanks in Durham City.

By gathering information on how residents and visitors move through and feel about the areas of the riverbanks under the care of Durham Cathedral, the Trust, together with the Cathedral, will develop community-driven ideas for future projects to improve natural habitats and experiences along the riverbanks.

If you live in, or have visited Durham City, please do take our short survey available online here - https://www.durhamwt.com/durham-riverbanks

The survey will be open for responses until Monday 28th April. If you have any queries, please do let eroutledge@durhamwt.co.uk  know.Durham Wildlife Trust and Durham Cathedral are working together to understand how people use and enjoy the riverbanks in Durham City.

The Discovery of Birds

An Exhibition at Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens

From the dazzling plumage of exotic species to the meticulous studies of Britain’s beloved garden birds, The Discovery of Birds at Ushaw is a must-see exhibition for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Running from Saturday 12 April to Sunday 22 June 2025, this fascinating exhibition uncovers the evolution of bird art and ornithology, drawing on Ushaw Library’s extraordinary collection of natural history books. Spanning the Renaissance to the nineteenth century, it showcases the work of pioneering naturalists and illustrators who shaped our understanding of avian life.

Marvel at breathtaking illustrations that brought the world’s birds to life long before photography. Discover how explorers, scientists, and artists documented newly discovered species, capturing the beauty and mystery of the avian world. This is more than an exhibition—it’s a journey through the golden age of bird discovery.

Entry is included with an Ushaw Membership or Day Pass.

Planning is now underway for the 2024 Club Annual General Meeting, which will take place on Tuesday 27th August at 7.00 p.m. at the Washington Wetland Centre, Barmston Lane, Pattinson, Washington NE38 8LE.

The documentation for the business part of the meeting will be added here over the next few weeks. and will be complete no later than 6 August, with most papers available well before that.

The meeting will include annual elections. It is vital for the future of the Club and the development of its activities that we should strengthen the Board of Trustees. Half of the permitted twelve seats are likely to be vacant. A printable/downloadable form for nominations to the Board, to be received no later than Sunday 4 August, can be found here.

Following the business of the meeting there will be a talk by John Gowland, Reserve Manager at Washington Wetland Centre. This will be entitled The Wildlife of the Wetlands and will look at the diverse wildlife and habitat found at the Washington Wetland Centre, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds, as well as at key projects such as the Willow Tit project.
